Like him, I came to the United States with my family at a young age. I suppose I’m most superficially similar to Reza. This is a tough question because I relate to all the characters. What character do you most relate to and why? I hope the love I feel for all these people comes through in the book. And the sense of belonging the queer community gave me inspired me. All the friends and teachers who accepted me as a teen inspired me. I was inspired to write this in honor of so many artists, activists and friends who have allowed me to have the life I have now. And it’s also the story of the way I was able to overcome that fear and shame thanks to people who allowed me to see and accept myself for the first time.
